Hi, all. I am curious about something. Do you guys think animals, dogs and cats particularly, can have nightmares? I ask because my cat Emma seems to. Sometimes she'll be sleeping, and she'll suddenly start crying. She won't be awake when she does it, or at least, I don't think she is, because she hasn't moved. So I'll put my hand on her and start talking softly to her. She'll usually jump a little, then look around, stretch out, and start purring very loudly. I sometimes wonder if it's because she's happy to be awake and know she's safe, or if its a self-comforting thing, after whatever dream she's had. Or sometimes, if I'm not right there, I'll hear her rouse from sleep with a really loud, sharp cry. Then she'll walk around crying until I at least say something to her, and then she comes running.
I am wondering if she is dreaming about her past, or if she's dreaming at all. What do you guys think?
I think animals do dream. I used to have a cat who would cry once in awhile in her sleep or right after waking up. The cat I have now twitches a lot in his sleep. I'm sure he is dreaming when he does that.
I think animals dream because my dog will sometimes make these yipping noises in his sleep and his legs twitch. I didn't know until reading the first two posts that cats do the same thing. lol Exactly what they're dreaming about, we'll probably never know.
My guide dog yips, moves his paws, and even has growled in his sleep. I also wonder what he is dreaming about.
Both my cats have been pretty quiet while they sleep, but sometimes, Kayla will meow a little meow and I'll pet her and then she'll wake up and start licking my hand.
My guidedog does the twitching thing a lot. he sometimes yips, but my friends dog does it like every night, at least she did when we were in class. lol

dogs are probably reliving chases with rabbits etc when they do that kinda thing, cats maybe too. hehehe well dogs yipping and pawing in their sleep is quite common. tis funny when it happens.
That's true, it is.
Ditra makes little yipping noises sometimes. When I acknowledge this behavior by saying, "Ditra, run faster," she stops. lol
